Urban Planner

Avannaata Municipality is seeking an urban planner for the planning department in Ilulissat. You will work on planning tasks of various types and scales in a politically governed organization. Responsibilities include business and planning development, preparation of municipal plan supplements and local plans, as well as dialogue with citizens and contractors.

Avannaata Municipality is seeking an urban planner for our planning department in Ilulissat starting May 1, 2026, or by further agreement.

You will work as an urban planner in the planning department under the Administration for Technology. Professionally, you will report to the Head of Department for construction, urban planning, building, and land case processing.

Avannaata Municipality has its central administration in Ilulissat. Avannaata Municipality has 10,951 inhabitants, who live spread across 4 larger settlements and 21 smaller settlements. Ilulissat (5,150 inhabitants) is undergoing significant development, and hotels and new housing are being built in the near future.

Near Ilulissat lies the world-famous Icefjord Kangia, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and attracts many tourists to the area each year. Midnight sun, dog sledding, icebergs, fishing, UNESCO, the sea, sea ice, and northern lights are characteristic of Greenland's northernmost municipality, Avannaata Kommunia. The town has many associations in sports and culture that you can become a part of. There are several restaurants and cafes in the town.

Main tasks

As an urban planner in Avannaata Municipality, you will have the opportunity to work on planning tasks of very different character and scale. In addition to working with spatial conditions, you will also work in a politically governed organization. This may, for example, mean that you follow a case from the idea stage and consultation with the applicant to the realization of the planning basis through the municipal council. Day to day, there will be a lot of collaboration with other departments in the technical administration as part of the municipality's development.

Your tasks will include:

·To engage in work with business and planning development.

·To prepare municipal plan supplements and local plans.

·To engage in daily dialogue with ordinary citizens, contractors, and self-government.

The work is carried out in close collaboration with the land department.

To inform politicians about current issues through our committee meetings.

Participate in the streamlining and modernization of case processes in the planning department.

Citizen service and committee work.

The above will be core tasks for the position, which will also receive interdisciplinary project tasks from the entire administration to a significant extent.

Desired qualifications

We seek applicants with strong professionalism and integrity, and with an educational background as an architect, urban planner, civil engineer, geographer, or equivalent.

You have an understanding of political processes and experience with municipal planning practices.

You have experience from similar positions or have a strong interest in public administration.

You demonstrate flexibility regarding work tasks.

You are a solid user of IT, have knowledge of the Office suite, GIS, and MapInfo.

You are good at communicating in writing, verbally, and graphically.

You are bilingual (Greenlandic/Danish) but not a requirement.

You want to work in a politically led organization.

You also have the desire and courage to work on tasks of very different nature and at times tasks that fall outside your normal field of expertise.

Salary and employment conditions

Salary and employment will be in accordance with the applicable relevant collective agreement. Housing will be provided for the position.

The employment will be subject to a 3-month probation period.

About the position

The position is organizationally placed in the planning department of the Technical Administration in Ilulissat.

The Management for Technology currently has 20 employees, consisting of architects, engineers, constructors, and other technicians. The geographical area covers Ilulissat and the towns of Uummannaq, Upernavik, and Qaanaaq, along with the associated settlements.

The Administration for Technology has contact with citizens and the business community.

Criminal record

This position is subject to the law on the obligation to obtain a criminal record. According to the law, employment can only begin once the Municipality has received a criminal record. We would therefore like to point out that the start date can only be agreed upon once the Municipality has received the criminal record from the Police.
