Tupaarnaq Children's Home is seeking a social and health assistant to work with neglected children in Nuuk. The position involves participating in activities, project trips, and summer camp, as well as interdisciplinary treatment work. We are looking for an energetic and independent person who can work with varying hours and be a role model for the children.
The Tupaarnaq children's home is designated for 9 children aged 4 to 18 years. Distributed across 2 departments. The target group is children and young people who have experienced neglect and are at risk of developmental issues, but with developmental potential. The staffing consists of 1 director, 2 department heads, 4 educators, 4 social workers, 2 assistants, and 1 cleaning/cook.
The children's home was established in 2005. All children and young people placed at Tupaarnaq come from Nuuk, where the institution is located. This practically means that the family and other networks are an important part of our pedagogical work and strategy. We prioritize relational work highly among all involved parties, as our experiences tell us that the family has a significant impact on the child's development and well-being.
Our everyday life is structured and the predictability is high. We believe that these two concepts create the necessary security, which is essential for the child's development of trust in themselves and their surroundings.
Our activity level is relatively high; we use the swimming pool, ski lift, and sports clubs as much as possible. We believe that physical well-being and motor skills contribute to creating a healthy surplus and foundation for development in relation to the mental, cognitive, and emotional challenges that the children face during the assessment. Our fundamental belief is that if one is to learn to honor and understand the social rules of society, the child must be challenged in the various environments and contexts where we have our activities. Therefore, it is important that you, as an employee, want to and can participate and be active in the activities that are set up for the children. The activities should be understood as relationship-building, the common third, and used in the narrative storytelling in our everyday context.
When the children have summer holidays, the entire institution goes on a colony. In the summer, we are away for 2 months where we live in a tent camp deep in the fjord (Ameralla/kilaarsarfik). Here we work on the development of the children on several parameters. We work on relationship building, community understanding, outdoor skills, physical and mental challenges/struggles, hunting and fishing, sports, team building, and mindfulness, and not least duties and tasks that need to be completed when living in nature. During Easter/winter, we typically sail to Qoornoq for 10-12 days, where the premise is different in relation to wind and weather. Here, winter activities are practiced, such as skiing, snowboarding, building snow caves, ptarmigan hunting in the mountains, and fishing with a rod. In addition, there are duties such as fetching ice for water, cooking, emptying the bucket (dry toilet), washing dishes, and general tidying up in the house.
We are therefore looking for energetic and independent social and health assistants who are willing to work with changing working hours. We are seeking colleagues who can build trust and care, set boundaries, and be role models. Your work month will typically include 4-5 night shifts.
Shift in the duty room is not included in the standard of 40 weekly hours. Therefore, you will receive a regular hourly wage during the sleeping hours. In addition, there will be evening shifts from 1 PM to 9 PM and day shifts from 7 AM to 3 PM, as well as every other weekend.
