Shall we be colleagues in the Maternity Department in Nuuk?
We are looking for midwives for both permanent positions and temporary contracts starting from December 1, 2026, or by further agreement. We look forward to reading your application.
We value presence and continuity in pregnancy and childbirth highly.
Working as a midwife in the maternity department in Nuuk is characterized by independent midwifery work and having time for calm and presence. We work for the preservation of normal childbirth, good collaboration across professional groups, and to help vulnerable families as best as possible.
The maternity department at Queen Ingrid's Hospital in Nuuk is a smaller specialized birth center with approximately 500-600 births annually, of which about half are referred from coastal towns due to complications or lack of preparedness. We have a cesarean section rate of about 12% despite the large proportion of complicated pregnancies. Greenlandic birthing women have a reputation for giving birth beautifully and quickly, which is also what we experience. The Greenlandic birth culture is characterized by a large proportion of uncomplicated pregnancies, quick births, and strong support from family and the pregnant woman's network, where the birthing woman often has many with her during the birth, and they are good at providing the care that the birthing woman needs.
In the consultations, we have the opportunity for continuity, as we as midwives follow the pregnant woman and her partner from the start of the pregnancy, about from week 9, where we conduct a one-hour intake interview. We follow the pregnant woman throughout the pregnancy and offer midwife consultations at weeks 12+22+28+32+36+38+40 lasting 30 minutes. Additionally, we offer MANU, parent preparation education that is specially designed for expectant parents in Greenland.
You will have the opportunity to influence your own schedule.
We offer:
- An exciting job in a fascinating country, in a workplace with great influence on your own daily life and managerial support.
- Primarily maternity ward shifts, consultations, and possibly teaching in parent preparation.
- Work in 2 different shift types; 8-hour shifts in the form of day shifts or evening shifts and on-call shifts from home. In the on-call shifts, you either have the first call from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM or from 8:00 PM to 7:30 AM. You can expect to have 1-3 on-call shifts per week and work every other weekend.
- During your introduction days, you will be accompanied by a colleague who will introduce you to the functions you will perform.
- A varied work week with consultations, outpatient pregnant patients, and a number of practical tasks such as restocking delivery rooms after births, ordering supplies/linens/food for patients, and emergency maternity ward work.
We are looking for you who:
- Have enthusiasm, good midwifery skills, and a positive approach to couples and colleagues.
- Highly value collegial and social competencies.
- Are bilingual in Greenlandic/Danish - this is not a requirement.
About us:
- We are a dynamic and committed team of 16 shift-carrying midwives, one development midwife, and one leading midwife. There are always 2 on call, and we assist each other during births.
- We have a good camaraderie and prioritize a good tone and social interaction in the department highly. We have, among other things, a shared breakfast every Friday, paid for by the department.
We look forward to working with you!
