Avannaata Municipality is seeking a department head for the school sector and MISI-Avannaa in Ilulissat. The position involves responsibility for the operation, professional quality, and development of the schools, as well as collaboration with leaders and employees to ensure strategic goals and results for children and young people.

Head of Department for School Area & MISI-Avannaa Ilulissat

Be part of creating strong schools and cohesive support for children and youth in Avannaata Municipality

Do you want to lead the school area and MISI-Avannaa with responsibility for both stable operations, academic quality, and development? Avannaata Municipality is looking for a head of department who can create direction, unite the area, and ensure that strategies and decisions are translated into tangible results for children, youth, and schools.

A central leadership role with real influence

As the head of department for the school area and MISI-Avannaa, you will be a central strategic and professional leader in the Administration for Culture, Schools, and Daycare. The position is located in Ilulissat. You report directly to the director of the administration and work closely with school leaders, staff, and consultants as well as the municipality's political and administrative leadership.

The area has significant political attention. The school strategy sets the direction for continued development, and political objectives must be translated into concrete initiatives. This requires a head of department who can bridge the gap between politics, administration, and practice and follow decisions through to completion.

The position requires that you ensure both stable daily operations and lead long-term development. You must be able to prioritize, create followership, and maintain a common direction across the municipality's towns and settlements.

About the school area and MISI-Avannaa

Avannaata Municipality is geographically large, and the schools operate under different local conditions. MISI-Avannaa is the municipality's VSP/PPR function and provides pedagogical-psychological counseling, guidance, and interdisciplinary support for children and youth. The head of department must view the area as a whole while also understanding local needs.

You will be the immediate supervisor for the consultants in the school area and the staff in MISI-Avannaa. You must strengthen the pedagogical, personnel, and administrative leadership of the school managements and ensure close collaboration between schools, MISI-Avannaa, daycare, and other relevant professional areas.

Your key tasks

• Set a clear professional and strategic direction for the school area and MISI-Avannaa in close collaboration with the director, school leaders, and the area's staff.

• Ensure stable and well-functioning operations, including follow-up on finances, staffing, teaching, student relations, case processes, and administrative tasks.

• Lead the work with the school strategy and ensure that political objectives and decisions are translated into realistic actions, clear responsibilities, and ongoing follow-up.

• Support the school managements and ensure clear professional leadership and prioritization of tasks in MISI-Avannaa.

• Strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration between schools, MISI-Avannaa, daycare, and other relevant partners with a focus on early and cohesive support.

• Provide political servicing, including case presentations, decision proposals, status follow-ups, and professional assessments.

• Ensure professional and pedagogical supervision and work systematically with quality, data, documentation, and evaluation in both areas of responsibility.

• Ensure implementation and compliance with applicable legislation, agreements, and guidelines.

• Contribute to recruitment, retention, and professional development of leaders and staff.

Your professional profile

We envision that you:

• have a relevant educational background, for example as a teacher, preferably supplemented with leadership training or other relevant further education

• have documented leadership experience and solid knowledge of the public school area; experience with VSP/PPR, special education, or interdisciplinary counseling is an advantage

• have experience from a politically governed organization or understanding of the interplay between politics and administration

• can translate strategy and decisions into practice and documentable results

• have experience with financial management, planning, prioritization, and follow-up

• communicate complex professional issues clearly and purposefully – orally and in writing

Your personal competencies

You are a leader who:

• creates direction, overview, and calm – even when there are many simultaneous tasks

• is clear, trust-building, and good at creating followership

• can prioritize and make decisions with an eye on both the whole and daily operations

• works systematically and follows agreements and initiatives through to completion

• meets leaders, staff, politicians, and partners with respect and professional confidence

We offer

• a meaningful leadership position with significant influence on the school area and MISI-Avannaa

• the opportunity to shape professional development and translate highly prioritized objectives into practice

• close collaboration with engaged leaders, staff, colleagues, and the political leadership
