Kujalleq Municipality is seeking an experienced emergency manager to lead the municipal rescue service. The position requires relevant education and experience in fire and emergency matters. The application deadline is August 28, 2026.

The southernmost municipality of Greenland is seeking a motivated, energetic experienced emergency manager starting September 1, 2026 or by further agreement.


The municipality consists of the 3 former municipalities of Qaqortoq, Narsaq, and Nanortalik, 11 settlements, and 37 sheep farming places and agriculture – a total of about 7,000 inhabitants. We are in a good development and are currently facing major tasks and challenges.


The position's organizational placement is in the Department of Technical and Environmental Management - Emergency Services, where the immediate supervisor is the Department Head.


Qualifications:

  • Education as an incident commander.
  • or education as a team leader, and willing to undertake a targeted training program to become an incident commander for urban and aerial operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of Greenlandic fire and emergency conditions.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation in Greenland.
  • Completed the following education and courses: basic training I and II, first aid course, functional training in fire, assistant instructor/adult pedagogical basic course, team leader fire, incident commander urban and incident commander aerial
  • Preferably have education in fire technical building case processing
  • Preferably have experience working in public administration,
  • Have knowledge of IT tools including preferably AutoCad.
  • It is important to possess good collaboration skills, to be able to maintain an overview in pressured situations, and to be able to work in a bilingual environment, where equal emphasis is placed on professional qualifications as well as human qualities.
  • Bilingual – Greenlandic and Danish
  • Have a valid driver's license


Main Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of disaster plans – coordination of exercises etc.
  • Preparation of fire regulations
  • Preparation of fire commission agendas – including minutes and follow-up.
  • Compliance with budget
  • Compliance with laws/regulations/provisions
  • Ensure that inquiries are answered within the time frame according to personnel policy
  • Ongoing information to superiors.
  • Preparation of fire inspection, training, and course plans
  • Preparation and follow-up of emergency sector plans


Advising other professional departments and building inspectors in connection with maintenance, renovation, and reconstruction of buildings.

Has contact with the building authority, the Housing Company INI, and insurance companies regarding municipal constructions.


Actively engages in creating an attractive workplace, where the department's vision, missions, and values are used and respected.


Area of Responsibility:

  • The municipal rescue service according to the emergency management act, adopted by the Inatsisartut.
  • As the coordinating emergency manager, you will have the highest professional responsibility for emergency services throughout the Municipality of Kujalleq.
  • Responsible for the local emergency services in towns and settlements, including budget planning and budget follow-up.
  • You will, in collaboration with the deputy emergency manager and the two fire inspectors, be responsible for training the fire brigade on business processes and procedures within the area of responsibility, and the fire department's personnel, training, and equipment are in accordance with, and ahead of, applicable legislation.
  • You will have the highest professional responsibility for and supervision of preventive work, fire inspections, and

fire technical case processing.

  • Personnel responsibility, including follow-up regarding sick leave, vacation planning, etc.
  • Financial responsibility for the emergency service budget for the entire municipality
  • Operation and maintenance of the coordinated rescue service buildings, including municipal command centers and training facilities, rescue service equipment, etc. in the Municipality of Kujalleq.
  • Participation in usage permits.
  • Responsibility for operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment, etc.
  • Preventive activities in the Municipality of Kujalleq.
  • Resolution of Ad Hoc tasks in the Municipality of Kujalleq


Criminal Record/ Security Clearance:

This position is subject to the law on the obligation to obtain a criminal record. According to the law, employment can only begin when the municipality has received a criminal record. We must therefore point out that the start date can only be agreed upon when the municipality has received the criminal record from the Police.


Employment conditions according to applicable agreements.


Housing may be made available, for which a deposit/rent is paid according to applicable rules. Relocation travel and moving of household goods are provided according to applicable rules.
