Ilisimatusarfik is looking for a prorector to lead the university's strategic development and collaboration. The position requires a Ph.D. degree and experience in strategic management. The application deadline is August 10, and the position is to be filled as soon as possible.
The position of prorector at Ilisimatusarfik is available for appointment on September 1, 2026, or as soon as possible by agreement.
Ilisimatusarfik is Greenland's university and an Arctic university with a central role in the development of knowledge, education, and research for the benefit of Greenland and the Arctic. Ilisimatusarfik is locally anchored and collaborates closely with the community, authorities, businesses, and civil society, while national and international partnerships constitute an important part of Ilisimatusarfik's activities.
Based on Ilisimatusarfik's new strategy, the university is in an ambitious development phase. The coming years will be characterized by the implementation of the strategy's goals and values through concrete initiatives across the university. This includes, among other things, further development of educational programs, increased digitalization, and flexible educational offerings that make education accessible throughout Greenland, strengthening of research environments, and a significant expansion of the campus.
Research is a central part of Ilisimatusarfik's societal mission. The university is actively working to strengthen research quality and develop collaboration with Greenlandic and international research institutions, including other Arctic universities and higher education institutions of indigenous peoples. At the same time, Ilisimatusarfik undertakes research and investigation tasks of significant importance to Greenlandic society, including the historical investigation of the relationship between Denmark and Greenland after 1945.
Prorector's tasks
The prorector is part of Ilisimatusarfik's rectorate along with the rector and collaborates closely with the university director and department heads on the strategic and daily management of the university.
The prorector assists the rector in the ongoing development of Ilisimatusarfik and has a special shared responsibility for the implementation of the university's strategy, the development of education and research, and the strengthening of the university's national and international collaborations.
The prorector assists the rector in the work of establishing and serving councils and committees that support the ongoing development of education and research as well as collaboration on educational, research, collaboration, and working environment conditions, including evaluation thereof.
The prorector also has a special responsibility for the organizational anchoring and support of the historical investigation.
The specific division of tasks between the rector and prorector is agreed upon continuously. There will be an opportunity to enter into an agreement regarding research time as part of the position.
The prorector is the rector's deputy and assumes all of the rector's tasks and powers during their absence or incapacity.
Qualifications
The applicant must have a Ph.D. degree or equivalent qualifications in accordance with the Inatsisartut law on Ilisimatusarfik.
The applicant must have knowledge of Greenlandic conditions and insight into the education sector.
The applicant must have documented experience with strategic management of at least 2 years, or have other management experience in the education sector.
The applicant must have experience in managing and developing research and educational environments.
The applicant must have insight into a university's operations and the interaction between the university and the surrounding community.
In addition, emphasis is placed on the applicant:
having good analytical, strategic, and planning skills.
having documented experience with research and university teaching.
being able to handle and organize both administrative and academic tasks.
having a strong research profile within one or more of Ilisimatusarfik's fields of study.
having collaboration and communication skills and being able to create relationships internally and externally.
mastering Greenlandic, Danish, and English.
having an international outlook and experience with national and international collaborations.

About Ilisimatusarfik
Ilisimatusarfik, Greenland's University, was established in 1987 and currently offers 13 different programs, including some part-time programs at both diploma and master's levels. Ilisimatusarfik is an Arctic university that creates knowledge and innovation in a rapidly developing region. The board is the university's highest management. About the Joint Administration
The Joint Administration serves the entire university. It is led by the university director. The Joint Administration has departments in Ilimmarfik. The departments work closely with the academic units but also collaborate with each other. The tasks of the Joint Administration include: study administration, personnel administration, servicing the board and Academic Council, as well as other service functions for the university's employees and students. The Joint Administration is also responsible for the building operations of Ilimmarfik.
Salary and employment conditions
The position is filled on a fixed-term basis for three years. The position is currently salary-fixed corresponding to 38. The salary with fixed salary components, own contribution to pension, and fixed-term supplement in LR 38 amounts to DKK 78,594 monthly and DKK 943,128 annually as of April 1, 2026.
Initially, employment will be on collective agreement terms, where an applicant who is already a civil servant under the civil service laws for public Greenland may be employed under civil service terms.
For the position, there is no maximum service time set, and the provisions regarding compensation for overtime and provisions regarding compensation for lost days off do not apply; the working hours are initially 40 hours weekly.
Civil servants in the state and employees under a number of AC agreements, including the agreement between DJØF and the Ministry of Finance, have the right to unpaid leave in connection with employment under the Greenland Self-Government. The Ministry of the Interior has also recommended that municipalities and regions show goodwill towards applications for unpaid leave in connection with employment under the Greenland Self-Government. The provisions regarding unpaid leave also apply to spouses/partners of individuals employed under the Greenland Self-Government.
Salary and employment conditions, including the right to travel for employment and relocation of belongings, are in accordance with the applicable collective agreement between the Greenland Home Rule and the employee's professional organization upon employment/termination.
The workplace is in Nuuk.
Housing
No staff housing is provided for the position. If an applicant already has staff housing through employment in the Self-Government, the right to assigned staff housing is retained. The staff housing is linked to the employment relationship and must be vacated upon termination of the employment relationship.
