District Judge

Open positions as a district judge at Qaasuitsoq District Court, Kujalleq District Court, and Sermersooq District Court. Responsibilities include case processing, court hearings, and guidance. Requirements include legal qualifications and district judge training. Employment under civil servant conditions with salary scale 36 and North Atlantic supplement.

Qaasuitsoq District Court, Kujalleq District Court, and Sermersooq District Court each have a vacant district judge position. The three district judge positions are available for appointment as soon as possible.

The area of employment is the district courts in Greenland. The positions are located in Ilulissat, Nuuk, and Qaqortoq.

Your primary tasks as a district judge will be to

· process cases and make decisions in all areas of law that fall under the district courts

· serve as the presiding judge at court hearings

· contribute to ensuring efficient case processing of high quality

·      respond to inquiries from parties, professionals, authorities, citizens, etc.

· guide office employees, share knowledge with other staff, and participate in the ongoing development of the district courts

It is a prerequisite that you:

is unblemished and meets the conditions for voting rights to the municipal council

·      has passed the district court judge training mentioned in section 12, subsection 2 of the Administration of Justice Act, with a satisfactory result or has obtained an exemption from this

is professionally well-founded and has good legal qualifications

values good case handling and thoroughness highly

understands that the judiciary must provide its service within set targets for case processing

is ready to make decisions of great importance

is diligent, committed, and willing to put in extra effort when necessary

has good oral and written communication skills in both Greenlandic and Danish

·      has the desire and opportunity to participate in service trips to Greenland

The daily work in the district court is led by the presiding district judge, who, after consultation with the other judges of the court, decides on the allocation of cases among the judges and on the administrative handling of the cases. The district courts and the Court in Greenland have a close collaboration on operational matters and on the continued development of the first-instance courts.

To ensure the independence of district judges, district judges have employment protection, which means that cases regarding unsolicited changes of workplace, disciplinary action, suspension, and dismissal are handled by the Judicial Council.

Salary and employment conditions

Employment in the position is on civil servant terms.

The position of district judge is classified in salary framework 36.

The position is associated with a non-pensionable North Atlantic allowance. The total salary for the position currently amounts to 53,342 DKK per month at the current level (April 1, 2026).

A qualification supplement is provided after a total of 3 years and 5 years of employment as a district judge.

As a district judge, you will be covered by a number of agreements applicable to state officials, including rules regarding the right to relocation compensation upon appointment and the right to free travel after 2 years of service and for each subsequent service period of 2 years' duration.

Housing can be provided for the position, for which rent etc. is paid according to applicable regulations.

Employment process

The Judicial Council submits a recommendation to the Court Administration regarding the filling of district judge positions.

The Council of Judges expects to invite suitable applicants for a personal interview in week 38. The interview may possibly take place via video conference.

If you have completed the district judge training but have not engaged in judicial work for the past 6 months or more, it may be necessary to arrange an introductory program to provide the Judicial Council with sufficient basis to assess your professional and personal qualifications. If the Judicial Council does not have enough basis to evaluate whether you can be nominated for a position as a district judge, the council may recommend you for employment as a candidate for district judge at a district court. In that case, the court in Greenland will arrange a practical introductory program of at least 3 months.
