This position offers a unique opportunity to assist U.S. citizens and visa applicants while contributing to U.S. diplomatic efforts in the Arctic region.
This position is based in Nuuk, Greenland. The work schedule for this position is full-time, 40 hours per week.
What You'll Do
Job Overview:
The Consular Assistant interacts daily with U.S. citizens, visa applicants, host government officials, and other interested parties to provide the full range of Nonimmigrant Visa and American Citizen Services, including Special Consular Services and Fraud Prevention, offered at Post. Communicates directly with consular applicants, host country government officials, and U.S. citizens in
distress, and assists in the preparation of emergency messaging and website updates. Fields inquiries by phone, in-person, or in writing (email or written correspondence). The job holder handles routine inquiries and directs only highly complex, unusual, or questionable inquiries to a supervisor or consular officer.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
American Citizens Services
Manages passport and citizenship services including intake and processing of passport applications, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, and notarial requests. Provides guidance on citizenship laws and regulations, ensures compliance with procedures, and assists U.S. citizens in distress. Leads consular outreach initiatives and builds relationships with key interlocutors in popular tourism destinations across Greenland.
Visa Processing
Manages non-immigrant visa scheduling, screening, and processing. Performs document verification, prepares Security Advisory Opinion requests, conducts name check, prints and affixes approved visas, and monitors for fraud trends.
Communication
Acts as primary contact for U.S. citizens, visa applicants, and representatives. Maintains relationships with local governmental and non-governmental organizations and coordinates internal and external communications.
Accountability
Manages and safeguards controlled items, personally identifiable information (PII), and sensitive records. Maintains physical and electronic files in accordance with security protocols.
Fraud Prevention
Investigates and analyzes potential fraud cases through online research, interviews, document validation, and data analysis to support consular operations.
Other Duties
Serves as the initial point of contact for visitors in the consular waiting room.
The Work Environment
You will work under the supervision of the Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate in Nuuk and be reviewed by the Consular Chief in Copenhagen. This role offers exposure to diplomatic services, customer assistance, and fraud prevention. Travel to destinations around Greenland on short notice may be required.
Qualification Requirements
Education
Completion of two years of post-secondary education is required.
Experience
Minimum two years of experience involving application of regulations and law, extensive public contact, customer service, and/or problem-solving.
Language Requirements

Greenlandic: Fluent (speaking/reading/writing)

Knowledge of local cultural, social, and legal environment.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to interpret regulations and handle sensitive cases.

Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
