About the region

The Avannaa Region consists of the towns of Ilulissat, Upernavik, Uummannaq, and Qaanaaq. In total, approximately 11,000 people live in the region, spread across the 4 towns and 23 villages.
The area is home to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The climate is harsh with very cold winters and cool summers, and icebergs and glaciers dominate the landscape.
Traditional lifestyles such as hunting and fishing play an important role in daily life.
Transport in the region can be challenged by large geographical distances and the harsh climate.

Despite these challenges, facilities such as schools, institutions, and airports have been established in the larger towns, supporting the dispersed community. North Greenland is thus a region that combines unique nature and a strong cultural identity with the challenges that come with life in the Arctic.
