About the Environmental Protection Agency

The Environmental Agency for Mineral Resources (Environmental Agency) is a unit staffed by 5 employees under the Department of Environment, Nature, Energy, and Research of the Government of Greenland. The Environmental Agency, together with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Business, and Mineral Resources, forms an important part of the Mineral Authority in Greenland.

The tasks of the Environmental Protection Agency

The task of the Environmental Agency is to ensure that the development of mining projects in Greenland occurs with the least possible negative impact on the environment and nature. The Environmental Agency contributes with professional knowledge about environmental conditions to support political decisions in accordance with the Mineral Act. Additionally, the Environmental Agency conducts assessments and makes decisions regarding environmental, nature, and climate conditions in the raw materials sector.

The specific task distribution of the Environmental Protection Agency is determined as much as possible based on the employees' professional background, experiences, and interests.

The position

These are permanent positions as AC employees to be filled as soon as possible. Candidates with the right skills and sufficient experience may, based on a specific assessment, be offered employment as Special Consultants.

  • In their daily work, the employees of the Environmental Protection Agency closely collaborate with dedicated colleagues at the Raw Materials Authority in connection with the responsible development of mining projects. The areas of work for the Environmental Protection Agency include, among other things: Processing applications for field activities, exploration, and exploitation;
  • Development and quality assurance of environmental assessments and monitoring programs;
  • Environmental supervision in relevant permit areas;
  • Project administration;
  • Preparation of decision proposals for the Naalakkersuisut and briefings for the management;
  • Management of ongoing communication with mining companies and other stakeholders in the raw materials sector.

The Environmental Protection Agency collaborates closely with the relevant ministries in the areas of nature, environment, and mineral resources. In addition, we have a close partnership with our scientific advisors at the National Center for Environment and Energy and at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources.

Qualifications

The Environmental Protection Agency is a small agency with a large area of responsibility, where versatility, overview, and the ability to maintain focus during busy periods are important qualifications. Solid work experience from similar areas and a welcoming and positive approach to collaboration with colleagues and the agency's partners are a great plus. The positions require a high degree of responsibility, loyalty, and professional thoroughness, as well as the ability to follow tasks through to completion and contribute to a solid foundation for political decisions.

  • We emphasize: A relevant higher education in natural sciences, environmental management, or similar.
  • Several years of administrative experience from relevant work in a private or politically governed organization.
  • Interest in and preferably experience with the environmental field, including raw material extraction.
  • Knowledge of and preferably experience with environmental assessments and environmental monitoring.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Interest in and preferably experience with public administration and public law.
  • Good language skills in Danish and English, and preferably Greenlandic.
  • A strong sense of responsibility and a proactive and organized approach to your tasks.
  • Good IT skills and preferably knowledge of F2, GIS, and Excel at user level.
  • A social and welcoming nature, as well as a positive attitude and a good mood.

Salary and employment conditions

Salary and employment conditions, including the right to relocation travel and moving of personal belongings, in accordance with the agreement/collective agreement in force at the time of commencement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant negotiating organization.

Housing

No staff housing is provided for the position. If an applicant already has staff housing through employment in the Self-Government, the right to the assigned staff housing is retained. The staff housing is linked to the employment relationship and must be vacated upon termination of the employment relationship.
