Assistant Professor/Study Assistant for the Department of Cultural and Social History at Ilisimatusarfik

The Department of Cultural and Social History at Ilisimatusarfik is seeking an assistant professor or study assistant in anthropology. The position is to be filled by August 1, 2026. The department is a research and learning environment focused on Greenland and Arctic cultures. Responsibilities include teaching, guidance, and participation in academic events.

The Department of Culture and Social History at Ilisimatusarfik, Greenland's University is seeking an assistant professor or teaching assistant in anthropology.

The position is desired to be filled by August 1, 2026, or by further agreement.

The working hours are 40 hours a week.

The Department of Cultural and Social History is a linguistically and culturally diverse research and learning environment with 51 active students, three PhD students, three full-time assistant professors, and a lecturer, as well as a number of guest lecturers and an adjunct lecturer. The department offers an interdisciplinary bachelor's and master's program that integrates historical, anthropological, general cultural and social science, and archaeological perspectives. We place particular emphasis on education and research focusing on Greenland and other Arctic cultures, as well as their historical and social development over time.

The languages of instruction are Greenlandic, Danish, and English.

Under the Institute for Culture, Language, and History, the Department of Cultural and Social History falls, which also includes:

  • Department of Language, Literature and Media
  • Department of Theology
  • Department of Translation and Interpretation

We expect that you have:

  • Relevant university education in anthropology at the master's level.
  • Research, teaching, and communication qualifications equivalent to the level of assistant professor.
  • Experience in teaching and/or communicating knowledge about Arctic societies and the history, culture, and living conditions of indigenous peoples, specifically in relation to Greenland.
  • Experience from fieldwork and/or interdisciplinary research collaborations focusing on Inuit culture and language skills in Greenlandic at a native level, as well as Danish and English at a high level.

Your tasks will primarily consist of:

  • Teaching at the bachelor's and/or master's level in subjects such as Inuit cultures, anthropological methods, anthropological analysis and theory, as well as electives at the bachelor's level.
  • Guidance and examination of students at the bachelor's level.
  • Participation in the planning and execution of professional and social events at the department.
  • Knowledge dissemination within the department's areas of expertise
  • Participation in the administrative and collegial collaboration

Employment procedure

The employment period at the level of study adjunct is 6 years with the possibility of a 2-year extension. After this, the employee can transition to a permanent position as a study lecturer following a positive assessment for a professorship.

Employment as a study lecturer can take place on the condition of a positive lecturer assessment prior to employment or if the applicant has obtained a study lecturer assessment in the subject area elsewhere.

Applications for the position of assistant professor will be processed by an appointment committee.

The employment period at the assistant professor level is normally for a period of 4 years with the possibility of a 2-year extension. After this, the employee can transition to a permanent position as an associate professor following a positive evaluation.

Assessment and hiring procedure for assistant professor

The assessment of the applicants is carried out by an expert evaluation committee according to applicable rules. After the application deadline, the applicants will be informed about the composition of the evaluation committee. The committee processes the received applications and submits a recommendation to the institute director.

About Ilisimatusarfik

Ilisimatusarfik, Greenland's University, was established in 1987 and currently offers 13 different programs, including options for part-time studies at both diploma and master's levels. Ilisimatusarfik is an Arctic university that generates knowledge and innovation in a rapidly developing region. The board is the university's highest management body. Daily management is handled by the rector and the university director. The four institutes are led by an institute head, who is advised by an institute council.

Ilisimatusarfik consists of 4 institutes:

  • Institute for Learning
  • Institute for Society, Economics & Journalism
  • Institute of Culture, Language & History
  • Institute of Health & Nature

The Joint Administration serves the entire university. It is led by the university director. The Joint Administration has departments in Ilimmarfik and Ilinniarfissuaq. The departments work closely with the academic units but also collaborate with each other. The tasks of the Joint Administration include: student administration, personnel administration, servicing the board and the Academic Council, as well as other service functions for the university's staff and students. The Joint Administration is also responsible for the building operations of Ilimmarfik.

Salary and employment conditions

Salary and employment conditions, including the right to relocation travel and moving expenses, in accordance with the agreement/collective agreement in force at the time of commencement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant negotiating organization.

Housing

An unfurnished staff housing can be assigned to the position according to the applicable rules at any given time. Housing cannot be assigned to individuals who already have staff housing or another property owned by the municipality or the Government of Greenland. Rent and deposit are paid according to the applicable rules for the assigned housing. The staff housing is linked to the employment relationship and must be vacated upon termination of the employment relationship.

Rent and housing standards may vary depending on the age of the property, ownership conditions, etc. There may be a waiting period for the allocation of permanent staff housing, which is why temporary accommodation may occur, including in smaller housing communities or hotel apartments, for which taxation applies. It is not possible to keep larger pets, such as dogs or cats, in staff or temporary housing.

3 months probation period

In this position, there is a 3-month probation period.
