About the department
The Fisheries Department is responsible for the daily administration and implementation of Greenland's fishing policy. Fishing is Greenland's most important industry and therefore receives significant political attention, with close cooperation taking place with the stakeholders in the industry.
The department is responsible for preparing recommendations for quota setting, issuing fishing licenses to both Greenlandic and foreign shipping companies and fishermen, ensuring the daily operation of fisheries, as well as various development projects. Preparing management plans for the fisheries in collaboration with the industry is also part of the department's tasks.
The department is responsible for bilateral fisheries negotiations with other North Atlantic countries and the EU, participates in coastal state negotiations regarding shared stocks, and is involved in a number of regional fisheries organizations such as NAFO, NEAFC, and NASCO, as well as Nordic and Arctic cooperation.
There is close collaboration with the political decision-makers, and a large part of the work will therefore consist of ministerial servicing and follow-up on the Naalakkersuisut's policy in the area.
