The Institute for Learning is seeking an instructor in natural sciences and in physics/chemistry, possibly with other subject combinations within teacher education. The working hours are 40 hours per week.

The Institute for Learning is seeking a teacher in natural sciences and physics/chemistry, possibly with other subject combinations, within the teacher education subjects. The working hours are 40 hours a week.

The position is to be filled as a teaching assistant or lecturer (master's degree background), or assistant professor or professor (Ph.D. background in science, physics/chemistry didactics).

The position is re-advertised and is available for appointment from August 1, 2026, or by further agreement.

The institute is responsible for teacher education, which is a bachelor's program, as well as courses and further education. There is a teaching staff of about 25 at the institute, and around 160 students.

The institute also includes the Greenland Research Center for Learning and Education.

  • Any research according to qualifications
  • You have a relevant master's degree or Ph.D.
  • You have teaching experience in the applied area.
  • You have experience working with a general didactic and profession-oriented focus.
  • You have insight into recent international research focusing on teacher education and primary school.
  • You can use digital tools in your teaching.
  • Knowledge of distance learning is an advantage.
  • You can teach within the competence areas of the natural sciences.
  • You have knowledge of the folk school and teacher education in one or more of the Nordic countries.
  • You can create a connection between theory and practice in the work of professionalizing the practice orientation of teacher education.
  • You have insight into recent professional and subject didactic research internationally, focusing on teacher education and the primary school sector.
  • The application for employment as a teaching assistant must, in addition to the application letter itself, include the following:

  • Appendix 2: Documentation for exams
  • Appendix 3: Contact information for up to three people from whom references can be obtained.
  • Appendix 4: List of publications and/or research and dissemination activities as well as teaching activities
  • Appendix 5: Any publications of a professional or communicative nature. The applicant may select a maximum of three publications that are particularly relevant for the assessment.

The assessment of the applicants is carried out by an expert evaluation committee according to applicable rules. After the application deadline has passed, the applicants will be informed about the composition of the evaluation committee. The committee reviews the submitted applications and makes recommendations to the institute director.

The employment period at the level of assistant professor is 6 years with the possibility of a 2-year extension. After this, the employee can transition to a permanent position as an associate professor following a positive evaluation.

Employment as a study lecturer can take place on the condition of a positive lecturer assessment before employment or if the applicant has obtained a study lecturer assessment in the subject area elsewhere.

The employment period at the assistant professor level is normally for a period of 4 years with the possibility of a 2-year extension. After this, the employee can transition to a permanent position as an associate professor following a positive evaluation.

Employment as a lecturer will take place on the condition of a positive lecturer assessment prior to employment or if the applicant has obtained a lecturer assessment in the subject area elsewhere.

About Ilisimatusarfik

Ilisimatusarfik, Greenland's University, was established in 1987 and currently offers 13 different programs, including options for part-time studies at both diploma and master's levels. Ilisimatusarfik is an Arctic university that creates knowledge and innovation in a rapidly developing region. The board is the university's highest management body. Daily management is handled by the rector and the university director. The four institutes are led by an institute head, who is advised by an institute council.

The Joint Administration serves the entire university. It is led by the university director. The Joint Administration has departments in Ilimmarfik. The tasks of the Joint Administration are: study administration, personnel administration, servicing the board and the Academic Council, as well as other service functions for the university's staff and students. The Joint Administration is also responsible for the building operations of Ilimmarfik.

Salary and employment conditions

Salary and employment conditions, including the right to travel for joining and leaving as well as relocation of belongings, in accordance with the agreement/collective agreement applicable at the time of commencement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant negotiating organization.

For an applicant with the right documentable competencies, employment as a special consultant, chief consultant, or senior advisor may occur in accordance with the applicable collective agreement.

Housing

No housing is provided for the position. If an applicant already has housing through employment in the Self-Government, the right to assigned housing is retained. The housing is linked to the employment relationship and must be vacated upon termination of the employment relationship.

3 months probation period

In this position, there is a 3-month probation period.
