By agreement Full-time On-site 10 Sep 2026 Deadline: 29 Sep 2026

The Tax Agency is seeking a director to lead a central authority in Greenland. The position involves responsibility for 127 employees and a focus on the development of IT solutions, control efforts, and organizational development. You must have significant management experience and an understanding of Greenlandic societal conditions.

Do you want to lead one of Greenland's most important authorities?

The Tax Administration plays a central role in Greenlandic society and is simultaneously facing significant development tasks. New IT solutions, a strengthened control effort, and continued development of organization and management must go hand in hand with the safe and efficient operation of an authority that solves society-critical tasks throughout Greenland every day.

As the head of the agency, you will have overall responsibility for approximately 127 employees and will also be a central advisor and partner for the Department of Finance and the political leadership. This gives you the opportunity to set direction and make a significant impact on the development of an authority that is crucial for the financing of the Greenlandic welfare society.

About the Tax Administration

The Tax Administration solves a number of society-critical tasks for citizens, businesses, and the public sector in Greenland. The agency is responsible for the collection of taxes and duties, control of the import of goods – including drug control as well as the collection of arrears for the Government of Greenland, municipalities, the Housing Company INI A/S, and Nukissiorfiit. In addition, the Tax Administration manages the mandatory pension savings.

The Tax Administration also plays an important role in international cooperation with the OECD, the UN, and particularly Nordic partners in the areas of tax, customs, and collection.

The Tax Administration employs around 127 staff members and 8 service dogs. Tasks are carried out from the headquarters in Nuuk, four regional offices in Qaqortoq, Maniitsoq, Sisimiut, and Ilulissat, as well as a smaller department in Denmark.

The agency is organizationally placed under the Department of Finance, and the head of the agency reports to the permanent secretary.

About you

You have a relevant higher education as well as significant managerial experience from a complex organization.

It is an advantage if you have in-depth knowledge of Greenlandic societal conditions and an understanding of the interplay between the Naalakkersuisut, Inatsisartut, and the municipalities. You must be able to navigate safely in the Greenlandic political and administrative context and understand the special conditions that apply to the management of a nationwide authority in Greenland.

We particularly emphasize that you:

  • have a high professional level and a strong understanding of economic, regulatory, and authority-related issues
  • have solid management experience, including experience with both direct personnel management and management through leaders
  • have experience in developing and implementing strategies and driving larger development and change processes, including preferably the implementation of new IT solutions
  • can create results through clear leadership and strong relationships
  • have a relevant higher education
  • can act confidently in a politically led organization and translate political and administrative decisions into effective authority operations.

As a leader, you are approachable, clear, decisive, and trust-building. You are results-oriented and able to set a clear direction, create followership, and at the same time give leaders and employees responsibility and space to succeed.

It will be an advantage if you master Greenlandic, Danish, and English as well as have knowledge of Greenlandic culture and society.

Experience in the area of taxes and duties will be a significant advantage, but it is not a requirement. We emphasize that you have the managerial and professional weight to quickly familiarize yourself with the area and lead a complex authority responsible for, among other things, taxes, duties, customs, control, and collection.

About the position

The Tax Administration is facing a number of significant development tasks. A central focus is the modernization of the agency's IT support, particularly a new IT tax system. At the same time, the control effort must be strengthened, and organization, management, and workflows must continue to develop.

The Tax Administration is also characterized by many engaged and experienced employees, several of whom have been part of the organization for many years. This gives the agency significant professional and organizational knowledge, which is important to both protect and pass on. As the head of the agency, you will therefore have an important task in strengthening talent and competence development, creating good frameworks for knowledge sharing, and ensuring continuity in the organization as there will naturally be a generational shift over the coming years.

As the head of the agency, you must ensure the balance between stable and secure authority operations and the necessary development and modernization. You will have significant managerial responsibility and a central role in setting direction for this development in close collaboration with the Department of Finance.

The position involves close collaboration with the Minister for Finance and the Department of Finance on the development of the tax and duty area.

You must therefore be able to navigate safely in the tension between professionalism, operations, political priorities, and long-term organizational development.

As the head of the agency, you will be responsible for:

  • leading and developing the Tax Administration and setting a clear strategic direction for the organization
  • ensuring stable and effective operations
  • preparing professionally solid decision-making bases for the political leadership
  • implementing political and administrative decisions
  • coordinating the agency's task resolution with the department and other partners
  • supporting high professional quality and compliance with applicable legislation, guidelines, and procedures
  • developing strong collaborative relationships internally and externally
  • carrying out representative and diplomatic tasks in connection with international cooperation
  • strengthening talent and competence development as well as systematic knowledge sharing, so that the agency's strong professionalism and organizational experience are passed on and developed in connection with upcoming generational shifts
  • ensuring that the Tax Administration remains an attractive workplace with a focus on well-being, development, and good leadership.

Salary and employment conditions

The position is primarily filled on a fixed-term basis for 4 years. The salary is currently set corresponding to 39. The salary with fixed salary components, own contribution to pension, and fixed-term allowance in LR 39 amounts to DKK 88,927 monthly and DKK 1,067,124 annually as of April 1, 2026.

Employment will primarily be on collective agreement terms. If the applicant is already a civil servant under the civil service legislation for the public sector in Greenland, employment may be on civil servant terms.

For the position, there is no maximum service time set, and the provisions on compensation for overtime and lost days off do not apply. The working hours are primarily 40 hours weekly.

Salary and employment conditions, including the right to travel for employment and relocation, follow the applicable collective agreement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant negotiating organization at the time of appointment.

Employees in the state have, depending on the collective agreement, the possibility of unpaid leave when employed under the Government of Greenland. The state has also urged municipalities and regions to accommodate requests for leave in connection with employment under the Government of Greenland. The scheme also includes spouses or partners.

Housing
Unfurnished staff housing can be assigned for the position according to the applicable rules at any time. Housing cannot be assigned to individuals who already have staff housing or another housing owned by the municipality or the Government of Greenland. Rent and deposit are paid according to the applicable rules for the assigned housing. The staff housing is linked to the employment relationship and must be vacated upon termination of the employment relationship.

Rent and housing standards may vary depending on the age of the housing, ownership conditions, etc. There may be waiting time for the assignment of permanent staff housing, which is why temporary accommodation may occur, including in smaller co-housing or hotel apartments, for which taxation occurs. It is not possible to keep larger pets such as dogs or cats in staff or temporary housing.
