We are looking for an engaged medical student for a surgical ward that primarily receives acute orthopedic surgical patients. You will have a daily routine close to the surgical patients and will primarily work with a fixed duty with a patient undergoing rehabilitation in the K1 department.

What can you expect?

The K1 department is looking for medical students, preferably around the 7th semester of their education, for a period of three months, where the main task will be fixed duty with a patient undergoing rehabilitation. There will of course also be opportunities for relief and participation in the care of other surgical patients. The position is 40 hours a week and you will be part of a three-shift rotation.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses, health assistants, physiotherapists, interpreters, and kitchen assistants. All tasks are performed in close collaboration with and under the supervision of the nursing staff in the department.

Job tasks include, among other things:

• Measurement of vital signs: blood pressure, pulse, saturation, respiratory rate, and temperature
• Personal care for a patient with fixed duty, in close collaboration with the nursing staff
• Participation in rehabilitative training in close collaboration with physiotherapists and occupational therapists
• Participation in ward rounds together with the nursing staff when the orthopedic chief physician assesses the patient
• Documentation of performed work in EPJ COSMIC
• Participation in interdisciplinary meetings regarding the patient and preparation of minutes of agreed further plans
• Participation in table rounds Monday to Friday with nursing staff, physiotherapists, chief physicians, and resident doctors
• Participation in morning meetings and lunch reports, where status and collaboration regarding patient courses are discussed
• Other possible tasks include providing nursing care in close collaboration with the nursing staff for other patients in the K1 department.

• We focus on professional development in the department, and each week we have meetings lasting 15-30 minutes, where we work on development areas using the PDSA model.
• We have selected certain staff as resource or key persons, who are responsible for specific areas such as hygiene in the department, work in the medication room, etc.
• We focus each year on ensuring that permanent staff receive a wound care course and/or refresh their skills in wound treatment.
• We strive to provide good nursing care to our patients with a focus on quality, and we are pleased to have students/pupils who regularly come and give us "new fresh eyes" on our workflows.
• Our department is an acute department with a high flow of patients, where things can get hectic and where there can be many balls in the air. Therefore, we focus on taking care of each other and prioritize tasks using the prioritization ladder.
• Together, we focus on patient safety, which requires that one becomes well acquainted with workflows, which is why we have adapted our introductory materials for our new colleagues who come either in permanent positions or in short-term contracts.
• We provide acute nursing care during weekdays, as many of our patients come as treatment-requiring acute orthopedic surgical patients.
• We pick up our patients from the coast in ambulance planes, provided that the patients are not critically ill. We also accompany them home if needed.
• We focus on strengthening our clinical professional perspective so that we can provide good surgical nursing care and develop our knowledge and skills in the nursing profession.

We are looking for you who:

• Are a team player and have the courage to come and become part of our team
• Preferably have/will have experience in surgical nursing
• Preferably have/will have experience working as a fixed duty with a patient
• Are willing to perform and/or learn instrumental nursing such as: Insertion of IV cannula, urinary catheter, nasal tube, VAC, etc.
• Have good patient contact
• Are adaptable, including learning the EPJ system COSMIC
• Are curious and adaptable
• Are willing to teach others, but also have the courage to learn something new on a professional and/or personal level
• Have the ability to express yourself constructively and are willing to provide professional input
• Can show patience and humility
• Are willing to work in 3-shift rotations with weekend duties every other week.

About us:

The K1 ward at Queen Ingrid's Hospital is part of the Surgical Area.

We are a busy acute surgical ward with many exciting and challenging nursing tasks in everyday life.

We have a versatile specialty with both acute, elective, and outpatient patients in orthopedics, wound care, and ear-nose-throat surgery.

We receive patients who need knee and hip arthroplasty or who require inpatient ear-nose-throat surgeries, such as tympanoplasty surgeries. A wide range of different wound treatments are performed, where patients with chronic or complex wound types are treated in the department or in our wound outpatient clinic.

We have 18 beds and are staffed for 20 full-time positions.

We are a multicultural, versatile, and interdisciplinary team consisting of: Nurses, health assistants, physiotherapists, interpreters, and kitchen assistants. Among the staff, there is a development and education responsible nurse, a coordinating nurse, and a work environment representative.

We primarily focus on a good psychological working environment in the department, where we value good relationship building, camaraderie, and the ongoing integration of new colleagues into the team. We are also known for having a good humorous approach to each other in everyday life.
