Oqaasiliortut

At Oqaasiliortut, we work with something that means a lot to many Greenlanders: to take care of, develop, and strengthen the Greenlandic language as society changes. We closely follow the development of the language and help ensure that kalaallisut also functions when new words, new fields, and new ways of communicating arise.

A large part of our everyday work involves collecting, registering, and assessing new words and expressions – and approving professional terms, so that there are precise and usable Greenlandic terms in everything from administration to modern technology. We also contribute to creating clarity and common guidelines regarding official spelling and language use.

We collaborate closely with Oqaasileriffik (Greenland's Language Secretariat) and have contact with both public institutions and many professional environments. This makes the work varied: Some days it is about language standardization and advice, other days about ensuring that Greenlandic word choices and formulations make sense in practice – for those who use the language every single day.
