Greenland Climate Research Center seeks a postdoc for Arctic bioacoustics and soundscape ecology. The position is one year with the possibility of extension and is located in Nuuk. The candidate will coordinate and develop the Arctic Acoustic Observation Network and conduct analyses of underwater sound and its relationships to marine animals.
Greenland Climate Research Center (GCRC) at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GINR) is seeking applicants for a postdoc position in Arctic bioacoustics and soundscape ecology with tasks under the Arctic Acoustic Observation Network (AAON, CBMP/Arctic Council (Marine Mammals Expert Network | CAFF).
The position is a one-year postdoc with the possibility of extension and will be located in Nuuk, Greenland. We encourage the selected candidate to undertake research stays at AAON's partner institutions.
GCRC is responsible for several long-term monitoring programs that track physical and biological parameters in marine systems in Greenland and across the Arctic. The center develops and offers educational programs and provides research-based advice to authorities in Greenland and Denmark. The increasing human activity in the Arctic has made underwater noise a central parameter for understanding ecosystem changes and cumulative impacts on marine fauna.
The selected candidate will play a central role in the coordination and further development of AAON as well as in the implementation of pan-Arctic analyses of underwater sound and its relationships to marine animals and ecosystems. The candidate will work closely with an international network of researchers in marine bioacoustics, oceanography, ecology, and Arctic observation systems.
Areas of responsibility
The candidate is expected to:
-
assist in the coordination of and contribute scientifically to the Arctic Acoustic Observation Network (AAON)
-
analyze and interpret long-term and large-scale acoustic datasets from across the Arctic
-
conduct pan-Arctic analyses of soundscapes, anthropogenic noise, and animals' acoustic activity
-
publish scientific articles at an international level.
The selected candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in acoustics or bioacoustics.
The assessment will place special emphasis on the candidate's:
-
experience with analysis and handling of long time series of acoustic data
-
ability to work with large, heterogeneous, and multi-institutional datasets
-
scientific publications at an international level
-
ability to work independently while contributing to international collaborations.
Salary and employment conditions, including the right to relocation travel and moving expenses, in accordance with the agreement/collective agreement in force at the time of commencement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant negotiating organization.
Housing
No staff housing is provided for the position. If an applicant already has staff housing through employment in the Self-Government, the right to assigned staff housing is retained. The staff housing is linked to the employment relationship and must be vacated upon termination of the employment relationship.
The Greenland Nature Institute provides access to rental housing.
