Midwives sought for Greenland's most beautifully located maternity ward – Ilulissat Regional Hospital
- Do you want to find the core of your midwifery profession, where time is not a factor?
- Are you looking for broader midwifery experience and to unfold your areas of competence?
- Do you need a change of scenery or new challenges?
- Do you dream of a job where there is time for immersion and presence?
- Do you value continuity and midwifery care?
- Do you have a budding dream of working abroad and gaining a strong cultural perspective on a different birthing culture?
Then now is the time to act!
We are seeking dedicated midwives for Greenland's northernmost maternity ward, Ilulissat Regional Hospital - starting on January 1, 2027, or by agreement.
As the work as a midwife up here requires thorough introduction and training, we prioritize temporary positions of at least 2 months duration, but we would prefer that you have the opportunity to stay even longer.
Midwife in Ilulissat
Ilulissat currently has the only active maternity ward north of the Arctic Circle with about 100 births annually. We see pregnant women and those giving birth from all over North Greenland, thus covering a huge catchment area. There is ample time for each individual, and continuity is prioritized.
As a midwife in Greenland, your days will be diverse and exciting. You will handle everything from a positive pregnancy test to postpartum care and everything in between and around (including unwanted pregnancies). Your tasks will thus be broad, and you will encounter functions that you normally do not deal with in Denmark.
In addition to our consultation-based daily routine, the work also includes coastal visits, evacuations, birth preparation, work in interdisciplinary instances, as well as prevention, etc.
In Ilulissat, we primarily handle only completely normal and uncomplicated births, with limited options for interventions. This means that you will get the natural birth experience deeply ingrained and put your usual practice into perspective.
With us, you will be part of a small team consisting of 3-4 midwives with core values such as professionalism, respect, care, and trust. We have a strong collegial community where we work closely together, help each other, and there is always an opportunity for sparring. You will experience influence and professional development in a positive and safe working environment.
Who are you?
We are looking for someone who:
- Is a licensed Midwife.
- Values your midwifery profession highly
- Works professionally and takes pride in doing the job properly.
- Maintains an overview in acute and unpredictable situations
- Is proactive and ready to be challenged professionally
- Is curious, eager to learn, and quick to grasp
- Works independently and responsibly
- Recognizes your own competencies and is not afraid to ask for help.
- Is patient, empathetic, and a good listener
- Is good at communicating even when things get tough
- Is a good colleague who enjoys a good laugh
- Wants an experience of a lifetime.
It is an advantage if you have some consultation experience, but it is not a requirement.
It is completely irrelevant whether you have +20 years of experience or if you are new to the field - as long as you have a solid grasp of obstetrics and are not afraid to stand alone in acute situations!
About Ilulissat
Ilulissat is located north of the Arctic Circle. This means that up here you experience the extremes and opposites of what the climate offers. There are great contrasts throughout the seasons – midnight sun and 24-hour darkness. Warm summer days and cold winter days with temperatures down to -40 degrees.
Ilulissat is located by the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, which fills the long ice fjord with enormous amounts of icebergs every single day, which you can see from the hospital.
The climate makes the nature extremely diverse, completely unique, and overwhelmingly beautiful. No matter when you come, there are plenty of opportunities to combine an exciting work life with fantastic experiences in the untamed and breathtaking nature.
The town also offers cozy cafes, restaurants, cultural offerings, and an active local community.
Practical information
The positions are full-time with a 40-hour work week + the on-calls you receive when you are on duty.
Why a minimum of 2 months temporary position?

This requires a thorough introduction to both tasks, journal systems, and the special conditions that apply in the Greenlandic healthcare system. Therefore, we prioritize temporary positions of at least 2 months, so both you and the department get the most benefit from the training process and to ensure continuity and quality.
