Shift Supervisor

The Shift Supervisor is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and productive underground mining operations during the assigned shift. The role provides leadership, supervision, and coordination of mining activities while ensuring compliance with safety standards, operational procedures, and production objectives.

This position is rotational.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Health, Safety, and Environmental Responsibilities

• Ensure all underground travel ways and working areas are inspected and confirmed safe before work begins.
• Verify that all travel ways are free from loose rock that may pose a risk of injury to personnel.
• Ensure ground support is installed and maintained according to Nalunaq Gold Mine standards.
• Confirm that working areas are free from combustible materials and potential fire hazards.
• Ensure underground areas are free from hazardous gases, including NO₂, CO, and CO₂, and that ventilation provides an adequate supply of oxygen.
• Inspect blasted headings before any work commences.
• Ensure headings requiring ground support are inspected and properly supported before work continues.
• Confirm all personnel are cleared from blasting areas before blasting activities are carried out.
• Ensure all blast holes/sockets are identified, inspected, and confirmed free of explosives.
• Verify that all machinery and equipment are in safe operating condition.
• Ensure abandoned or unsafe areas are barricaded to prevent unauthorized or accidental access.

Shift Reporting and Documentation

At the completion of each shift, accurately record in the designated shift log:

• The condition of each workplace and underground travel way inspected.
• Safety, health, and environmental instructions issued during the shift.
• Any workplace under the Shift Supervisor’s responsibility that was not visited, including the reasons why.
• Any observed breaches of legislation, company standards, or safety procedures, including actions taken or recommended.
• Any safety, health, or environmental matters requiring attention by the incoming Shift Supervisor.

Mining Operations and Production Management

• Execute mine production plans to ensure development and production targets are achieved safely and consistently.
• Allocate operational resources, including personnel, equipment, and materials, to support safe and efficient production.
• Monitor underground activities to ensure work is completed according to operational plans, procedures, and quality standards.
• Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, innovation, and cost reduction within mining operations.
• Support the implementation of improved work practices and operational efficiencies.

Leadership and Team Development

• Provide effective leadership, supervision, and direction to underground crews.
• Lead by example by demonstrating strong safety behaviours and professional work practices.
• Coach, mentor, and motivate employees to work safely, efficiently, and productively.
• Identify training and development needs and support employee growth.
• Promote a strong safety culture and continuous improvement mindset across the operation.
• Ensure effective communication and coordination between teams and shifts.
